We believe that web and app developers should have open access to device knowledge to assist in the delivery great services and applications, safe in the knowledge that they know the capabilities of the device they are delivering to.
We expect a myriad of internet capable devices, especially mobile devices, to continue to emerge and for the users to expect the services delivered to be appropriately tuned for the device that they are using. Device knowledge, available via both server side and client side techniques, is an important tool to the cross-device web and app developer, that will allow them to deliver optimised and effective experiences to users connecting via each and every device.
Our Goals
- Encourage an ecosystem of open device data, extended device data & data interchangeability, accessible by both server side and client side techniques.
- Provide guidance to parties that wish to share open device knowledge.
- Support an ecosystem of peer-to-peer device knowledge exchange.
- Adopt existing standards and assist with new standards that facilitate device knowledge exchange.
- Demonstrate the value of accurate device capability detection and device knowledge to the end user experience.
- Provide objective and transparent metrics on techniques and services relating to device knowledge.
- Promote and collate education and reference material about all aspects of device knowledge.
